Cultural Perspective Awareness

Spending a long time abroad really opens your eyes to how diverse the world is. People do things in different ways, shaped by their environment, culture, and daily habits. In this week’s lesson, we talked about Cultural Perspectives, with a focus on Sleep and Rest.

After watching the Sleep in Japan documentary, I noticed how different Japanese culture is from Indonesian culture when it comes to sleep. In Japan, people often sleep on trains or in public places due to their busy lifestyles. Sleeping at work, known as inemuri, is sometimes seen as a sign of hard work and dedication. In contrast, in Indonesia, sleeping during work hours or in public might be considered unprofessional or even lazy.

However, both cultures do understand the importance of sleep. In Indonesia, people are encouraged to get 7–8 hours of rest to stay healthy and productive. Families often value a regular sleep schedule, and resting at home is more common than napping in public.

Through this comparison, I’ve realized that cultural perspectives affect even the most basic parts of life—like sleep. Understanding these differences helps me become more open-minded and respectful of how people live in other parts of the world.

  2. I am wondering if there is napping time during work in Indonesian culture?
Anyway, I appreciate your end note about the realization that even the basic part of life—sleep—is affected by various cultures.
